The Acai berry is purplish or reddish in color. In Brazil, in particular, the berries are washed and then soaked in water to make it soft. After soaking it will be pulped and turned into a juice. The natives drink the Acai berry regularly with their meals like one would drink coffee or tea. But since studies have shown that the berry has more antioxidants than grapes and red wine, it started to gain much attention worldwide as well.

The main exporter of the berry is Brazil. The fruit is harvested during the dry season and usually along the Amazon Riverside. The berries are then frozen or freeze dried. In Brazil, however, people consume the berries fresh.Anti-oxidants have already been touted by scientists as a free-radical scavenger. Free radicals have been linked to cancer. Anti-oxidants in large quantities can reduce free radicals and consequently prevent cancer. It’s the compound called anthocyanin and flavonoids found in the berries that help eliminate free-radicals from the body.

Acai berries also have a component that increases the metabolism. This is good news for people who want to shed a few kilos. The berries also have a large amount of fiber. Fiber is said to bulk-up the food which allows people to feel full much faster thus, those on a high-fiber diet have a tendency to lose weight as well. The berries are also a good detoxifier.

The berry is rich in vitamins like Vitamins B and C. It’s also rich in minerals like potassium, manganese, and copper. Surprisingly it also contains omega-3 fatty acids which are usually found in fish and seafood. It also contains omega-9 which is said to aid the body in absorbing more omega-3.

Potassium is the mineral most abundant in the Acai. Acai is also rich in copper, and unusually high in manganese. Only a small portion supplies far more than the body needs of this ultra-trace mineral.

Compared to other fruits and vegetables the Acai berry contains the highest levels of antioxidants particularly anthocyanins. It has more anthocyanins than red wine and other berries. Anthocyanins are said to have anti-aging properties as several scientific studies show. There was a study done that explained why there was less incidence of heart diseases and high cholesterol amongst the people of France.  The reason being that they consumed high levels of anthocyanins which are usually found in red wine. For those who do not like to consume alcoholic drinks, surely the Acai berry is a better alternative since it contains multiple times a number of anthocyanins than red wine.

The Acai berry is truly a super food. The great thing about this fruit is that it’s a really tasty juice that smells great as well. It doesn’t hurt that you have the added benefit of losing weight by consuming regular amounts of this fantastic berry.
